The 1st recorded history of the island is said to have begun in 1530 when Spanish explorers claimed it for the Crown. The 1st permanent resident and homesteader of the island, George Emerson Bean, who in the 1900s began developing the island with the Anna Maria Beach Co. laying streets, homes & water. Our first bridge was built in 1921, making it all the way to the mainland and today withstands thousands of vehicles a day during the season.
